How to Design a Wix Website? A Step-by-Step Guide

The first thing you need to do is Sign Up/Login to Wix. If you have not purchased a Wix Website yet, then you should read a quick guide on how to set up your website.

After you’ve done this, you’ll have a basic template ready that you would have selected while purchasing the domain. A template is just the base, it needs to be customized basis what you wish to show to your users.

Now, we will be discussing the elements that make up the design of a website. You can also apply these learning points to any other website builder, they work equally well.

Constituents of Design

1. Colour Scheme – The first and the foremost thing you need to decide is – “what is going to be the colour scheme of your Wix website”. Now, you may check out some Wix Websites for inspiration before narrowing down your choices. The key tip I have to share at this stage is:

Choose 3 colours out of which at least one should be black or white.

I chose black and white as the standard colours and I clubbed them with ‘Carrot Pink’ for Non-engineers and ‘Sea Green‘ for Cursive Impact. The reason I suggest you to choose three colours is because every other element has to sync with your colour scheme.

Too many colours make it difficult for your readers to connect with your theme. You should strive to build a brand and brands are often recognized by their colours alone. So, make yours stand out and keep it static.

2. Logo – The second element in the list is your website logo. If you don’t have any ideas for a logo in mind, go for the Wix Logo Maker. I created the Favicon of Cursive Impact using the free download option and it is really easy to make a logo using this feature.

Another way to create a logo is to use simple text. For example, the text that you see in the header is the on-screen Logo which I’ve chosen for Cursive Impact. It is simply written with a creative font. That’s it.

Always make your logo clickable and link it to your home page.

This is a tip I’d like to share based on my experience. I never noticed this until I created my own website that most websites have a clickable logo i.e. when you click on their logos, you are redirected to the home page.

In general, the logo is placed in the header of the website. You can keep it on the left/right depending on what suits the look and feel of your website. I prefer the left-side for logo on the desktop version because generally visitors look at a website left to right.

3. Template – A template may constitute elements like slideshows, images, moving objects, testimonials, etc. and how they are placed on the website. Make sure that you check out all the vibrant Wix templates before purchasing your domain.

Once you’ve chosen the template, you can edit it basis your liking. In my opinion, you should try to minimize the usage of slideshows, hover objects, large pictures or any custom animation, especially on the home page of your website.

Don’t use moving objects on the home page, they make it harder to load.

Instead of them, you can use the Wix Vectors and Shapes for designing any boxes, layouts for your website. If you’re using any images, don’t forget to compress them and add alt text in the settings.

4. Font – Though font is a part of template, I’m mentioning it separately because it needs to be elaborated. There are two important decisions to be taken here:

Choose fast loading fonts for the best website performance.

• Font Type – You should keep the font types limited because the more the font types, the more time it takes to load your web page. You can choose which font to select basis the loading time of each font.

• Font Size – There should be a maximum of 2-3 font sizes that you use for different headings. Make sure that your font size is H1 for the title of your blog posts because it makes it easier for the Googlebots to identify headings.

5. Navigation – The ease with which your visitors navigate your website matters a lot from SEO point of view. It also helps you get an AdSense Approval quickly using which you can start earning money from ad placements on your website.

Connect your home page to all other pages.

This is the most basic rule. Make sure that your home page is not heavy because it is the most important page of your website, most websites get the highest amount of traffic on the home page.

You must add two other credibility pages: About Us and Contact Us. They will help your visitors understand the purpose of your website. These pages also build trust on the author.

6. Blog – The final element you need to add is a blog. Adding fresh content to your website can help you attract new visitors and retain the existing members. Adding a blog to Wix has been simplified by this Wix Guide. You can go through it.

Once you’ve added a blog to your website, it is completely your choice whether you’d want to place it on the home page or as a separate page. In my previous website, the blog is on the home page, in this website, it is a separate page which is hidden.

Adding a blog to the home page can slow down your loading speed.

This is a problem I encountered with my previous website. So, this time, I’ve instead added a custom feed called Recent Posts on the home page, which displays the latest 6 posts. All other posts are made available through a hidden page which I’ve then linked to the text – “Read More“.

So, these were a couple of points I had to share with you regarding the designing of your Wix Website. Hope they help you make the right choices from the very beginning of your blogging journey. The golden rule in case of designing a website remains, “Keep it Simple“.
